Beware Of This Easy To Fall For AC Scam

It’s springtime. Time to pull your spring cleaning chores to get your home ready for the new season.

Cleaning the windows? Check.

Airing out your home? Check.

Adding refrigerant in your AC unit?

Take that one off the list.

Beware Of This Easy To Fall For AC ScamWe’ve noticed some homeowners fall for this every year, pulling out their wallets for something that doesn’t exist. If you hear a technician say it time for your annual refrigerant refill, turn the other way.

Here’s why.

Refrigerant plays an important role in your air conditioning system. Refrigerant is the reason your AC unit blows cool air.

But your AC unit isn’t like your car that needs periodic refilling of fluids like oil and gas.

Refrigerant flows through a closed loop of copper coils. Refrigerant is never used up because there isn’t a way for it to exit the loop. If it leaks, you have a problem with the system.

If a contractor tells you they’ve fixed the system by refilling your refrigerant, it still might indicate a problem. Again, you can’t refill refrigerant; that’s not the problem. The problem is the leak. So if you have to refill your refrigerant, you should also make sure they’ve repaired the leak. Or you’ll be paying for it again and again.

If your AC unit isn’t cooling properly, it might be because of a leak. Think about the tires on your car. If you have a flat, you don’t fill it up without investigating the cause. To fill it up only means it will be flat again in a short period of time.

Instead, you find the hole, and you fix it. You seal it. You stop the leak from allowing the air to slip away.

The same with your AC unit. You can’t fix your air conditioner without repairing the leak. Once the leak is fixed, only then can you recharge the system.
