Do Your Air Ducts Need Repair?

When was the last time you thought about your air ducts? Never, right? Few of us do.

We may think about our furnaces when they clunk and rattle, or the air conditioning unit when the cold air disappears. But the air ducts? Not so much.

The air ducts snake their way through your home, delivering conditioned air to each room. Without the ductwork, you wouldn’t have a comfortable home to live in. But there’s more to it than that. Your ductwork controls your indoor air quality as well.

It’s easy for air ducts to accrue damage from corrosion, age, rodents in the crawlspace or attic, or even from poor quality initial design and installation. Whether your ducts have gaps, leaks, or just bad connections, they only way they’ll provide stellar quality is if you invest in professional duct repair services.

How do you know if your ducts are in need of repair?

It’s easier than you might think.

When you’re at home, pay attention to the air flow throughout your home. Are there hot or cold spots in various rooms? If there are cold spots in the winter while the furnace is running, or hot spots in the summer when the air conditioner is blowing, you likely have ducts that aren’t functioning correctly. Something is preventing proper airflow from reaching that room.

You can also listen for odd sounds. When air flows through the ductwork, air ducts will expand and contract with the fluctuations in temperatures. When the furnace or AC unit first cycles on, you’ll likely hear a popping noise as it kicks in. This is normal. What isn’t normal is a continuing sound. If you hear rattling or shaking noises throughout the cycle, that is a sign that your ducts may have been damaged or are loose and in need of repair.
