Is All Air Duct Cleaning The Same?
Should you clean your air ducts? Or are they okay the way they are?
Searching the Internet will only leave you confused. There are sites that recommend cleaning to prevent health issues and to make your HVAC system more efficient. There are other sites that will tell you there is no research that proves it so.
So what should you do?
Use logic when it comes to the cleaning process.
Significant amounts of dust or large obstructions in the ductwork can cause a problem in the efficiency of your home. If your ductwork isn’t operating at optimal capacity, it means your home’s air temperature and quality isn’t where it should be.
The easier it is for air to flow through the air ducts, the easier it is for your system to deliver the air to your individual living spaces.
Any blockage that is created will hamper the air flow process. And that means higher energy bills over time.
To determine if cleaning your air ducts is warranted, see if any of these apply to you:
Obstruction – If you notice the ducts in your home have significant dust or debris, it may be a sign of an obstruction further down into the duct.
Unexplained Illness – If someone in your family is suffering from allergy or respiratory illness, and you’ve tried other precautions to no avail, it may be time to decontaminate your home and give it a thorough cleaning.
Biological Growth – When your furnace turns on, if you get a musty smell that never seems to go away, it may be time for an HVAC technician to inspect your ducts. Biological growth can become trapped in the system and be damaging to both your HVAC system and to your family’s health.
Insects or Rodent Droppings – If you see bodies of insects or rodent dropping in your air ducts, it’s a good sign they’ve been living in your ductwork now and in the past. First, solve the problem by finding out how they’re getting in. Once fixed, it’s time to have your air ducts cleaned.
While air duct cleaning isn’t a routine maintenance item, it is important to ensure the safety of your HVAC equipment and your family’s health. If there is a concern, cleaning your air ducts can ensure that the air circulating through your home is as clean as it can be.
