Commercial Restrooms Almost Always Have These Problems – Does Yours?

If you own a commercial property, chances are some of your biggest complaints center around the restrooms. If they aren’t working properly, you’ll receive a slew of complaints. If they aren’t clean, you’ll hear about that too. But no matter how much time you spend working on the restrooms, you’ll never satisfy everybody, and the complaints will continue to come in. Commercial Restrooms Almost Always Have These Problems - Does Yours?

Restrooms aren’t a place you can fix easily with a few repairs, or by scheduling more cleanings. If you haven’t made significant upgrades to your restrooms in the past few years, it might be time for a total renovation.

Commercial restrooms won’t last forever. As a whole, they have a service life of around 20 years. Think, for a moment, how much technology has changed in the past 20 years. And yet in many cases, the restrooms in commercial buildings haven’t changed at all.

Building codes have changed. Our expectations have changed. And our population as a whole has changed in what we expect and do. Changing out a broken fixture is no longer all it takes to keep the building’s occupants happy.

Too Old

No matter how many people circulate in and out of the restrooms each day, it’s easy for fixtures to lose their functionality. If you’ve taken the “if it isn’t broken, why fix it” method before, it might be showing in the way the facilities look. Doors may be marred, scratched, and worn. Latches may be showing wear. Fixtures may look dirty even when they aren’t. And if items can no longer be replaced because they are no longer in stock, it’s a warning sign it’s time to renovate.

Outdated Appearance

Sometimes appearance is in the eye of the beholder. You might think everything looks fine; after all, you’ve been onsite for years. But how does it look to someone visiting the first time? Do they cringe walking in? Do they try and get in and out as quickly as possible? Or are they impressed with the little touches? Look at every corner. Are there cracked tiles? Is the lighting system outdated? How many touchless features are installed? People no longer like to touch anything in a restroom. The more touchless technology you have, the more updated it will appear.

ADA Compliant

The older the restroom, the higher the chance it doesn’t meet ADA requirements. While some fixes might be minor, others may require a complete overhaul. The best way to ensure you meet guidance is to bring someone in to determine what should be implemented.
