Atlanta Energy Management Tips For After Hours

energy-management-tips-for-after-hoursThink the little things don’t add up? Think again.

Studies show the average commercial building wastes thousands of dollars each year simply by ignoring small problems. Things, like having a light that stays on 24 hours of the day, or having a room that always seems to be cold, can add up over time.

And because the average Atlanta building will spend up to ten percent of their operating costs on energy each year, fixing the problems early can be a big deal.

Lighting represents up to a quarter of all electricity consumed in a commercial building. Lighting retrofits can reduce lighting electricity used by up to 50 percent or more, depending on the starting point. You can also use a few other basic strategies to make everything you do more energy efficient:

Install timers to bathroom lights and exhaust fans to reduce excessive operation throughout the day.

Replace all light bulbs with more energy efficient ones. Look for EnergyStar certified CFL and LED bulbs to replace old incandescent and T12 fluorescent lamps.

Use daylight in the décor whenever possible. As you are renovating, take advantage of increasing areas of natural light in what otherwise were dark areas of your building. Atriums, hallways and other areas can also look more appealing simply by bringing natural light into play.

Heating and Cooling

Heating and cooling represent up to forty percent of the electricity consumed in commercial buildings.

Seal cracks around windows, doors with caulk and weather stripping.

Change your air filters regularly. Inspect them every month, especially during heavier use months, such as winter and summer. If the filter looks dirty, change it. At a minimum change them every three months.

Have your HVAC equipment evaluated and tuned on a regular basis. HVAC maintenance programs are built exclusively to allow you to ensure your equipment is in the best condition possible every month of the year.

During periods of low occupancy, close down floors or wings to reduce lighting and HVAC system expense in these sections.

Maintenance and Management

Turn off lights, televisions, heating and cooling, radios, technology equipment and more when rooms are unoccupied.

Reduce heat gain in the summer and heat loss in the winter by closing blinds and shades.

Always buy EnergyStar certified products for your business. The EnergyStar mark indicates the most efficient computers, printers, copiers, televisions, windows, thermostats, and other appliances and equipment.

Use power management features such as low-power sleep mode after designated periods of inactivity.
