Is A Heat Pump Right For Your Home?

Are you looking for ways to cut back on your natural gas usage? Are you looking for a way to heat and cool your home using electricity instead of natural gas? A heat pump might be the right choice for you.

Although many homes pair central air conditioning with a natural gas furnace, it isn’t your only option. Heat pumps are designed to transfer heat as opposed to creating heat. This process doesn’t require as much electricity as other methods, and can cut back on your energy usage especially in the spring and autumn when you typically don’t use a lot of heated air. It’s also a great choice for our Atlanta climate, when frigid weather isn’t the norm but rather the exception. Is A Heat Pump Right For Your Home?

Because of its ability to move from cooling to heating and back again, you can use the heat pump year round to stay comfortable in all kinds of weather. You can choose a split system – where the heat pump is paired with an air handler – or a package unit in which all components are stored in the outside unit.

Heat pumps are sold by a rating system – either SEER or HSPF.

SEER – Seasonal Energy Efficiency Ratio – measures the cooling efficiency. HSPF – Heating System Performance Factor – measures heating efficiency. Like other forms of heating and cooling equipment, if you select equipment with higher efficiency ratings, you’ll spend more money upfront with the potential to save money in the coming years on your utility bills. However, it is important to note that even a medium efficiency heat pump can offer significant savings over an old system that has little to no effect at all.

Whether you’re converting your existing natural gas system to a heat pump, or are simply replacing a system already in place, properly sizing it is one of the most important steps. If a contractor is willing to quote without looking at your home, it’s a red flag. Just like other HVAC systems, load calculations are critical to ensuring the proper equipment is installed in your home to do the job efficiently. Many problems can occur from improperly sized equipment, ranging from having cold or hot spots throughout your home, to having equipment that is always running, never being able to achieve the proper temperature you desire. The more stress you put on the compressor, the faster it will wear out. That means more repair work and faster replacement.

How do you know if a heat pump is the right choice for your home? We’re happy to evaluate your current heating and cooling system and help you make the right selection for your needs.
