How to Light a Water Heater

The lighting instructions are located right on the front of a water heater, but it’s pretty simple. You turn the gas valve to the pilot position, you depress the pilot assembly, and what that does is allow gas to come into the pilot tube. You then strike your striker and you can visually see the pilot light lit. You continue to hold the priming button for about 15 seconds, release it, turn the gas valve knob to the on position, and at this time the water heater should fire.

You turn your gas valve assembly to the pilot position. Depress the button for ten seconds. Then hit your igniter three times. This will light the pilot flame that is located inside the peephole right here. Continue to hold this button down for 15 to 20 seconds. Release the button. And as long as your flame is maintained here, you can then turn it to the desired temperature.

If you have trouble lighting your heater or once you light the pilot the pilot won’t stay lit, you need to have a plumber come out and take a look at it.

This may be a problem with the unit’s thermocouple or the gas valve.
