How Tankless Toilets Work

When it comes to bathroom fixtures, sinks and tubs aren’t attached to tanks. Water comes in and flushes out without a tank, so why does a toilet need one?

The reason is most residential toilets operate by using a siphon, which is a tube located at the bottom of the bowl. Water coming into the bowl must do it quickly enough to fill the siphon tube and push waste through and down the drain.

Most residential water lines aren’t quick enough to fulfill this process. So the tank provides the solution.

Water is held in the tank to create a supply large enough to create the force necessary for the siphon to operate. Without this gallon or so of water to pour into the bowl quickly, the water would simply fill up at a normal rate without creating the actual flush.

A tankless toilet does not rely on a tank of water to clear the bowl. Instead, it receives water from a supply line that has a high enough pressure behind it to force waste through the drainage system. It uses the same amount of water as the tank toilet, but the water enters the fixture at greater pressure. It uses what is commonly known as a flushometer.

Flushometers, in general, need up to 20 psi of water pressure to function properly. Because tankless toilets are connected directly to a water supply line, they can refill faster and be flushed again more quickly than their tank counterparts. They also produce a cleaner, more powerful flush each time. Which is why many experts predict tankless toilets are the future of modern day bathroom plumbing.

Because they don’t use the tank system, they also tend to be more reliable than tank toilets. However, it is important to note that they do tend to be a bit louder than tank systems. It’s important to keep that in mind when placed on common walls, especially if a bathroom is used all hours of the day.

These modern day versions of the tankless toilet are sleeker and more high-tech than ever before. They come in a variety of shapes, colors, and sizes, with technologies that are both clever and stylish at the same time.
