How Often Should You Test Backflow Devices?

Backflow is the reversal of the flow of water and/or other mixtures of liquids, gases, or other substances in the distribution pipes of the water supply system. Whether it’s for your home or for a business, these backflow devices should be checked yearly.

The backflow prevention device consists of two independently acting, spring-loaded check valves with two shut-off valves attached at each end. This device prevents backflow from other sources into the potable water supply.

How Often Should You Test Backflow Devices?

Depending on the backflow device you have in place, it can take anywhere from 10 to 30 minutes to complete the test.

Backflow devices fail for a variety of reasons. Common faults include accumulation of debris, rust, or having the rubber valve seats and springs compress and fail. Old devices can simply wear out over time.

Backflow devices are made of soft brass metal. When water freezes, it expands. This can cause the device to warp and fail over time.

All backflow devices are fed directly from the water meter. Therefore, to perform the test, or to repair the equipment, the water must be shut down. After the testing gauges are connected to the backflow device, the water will be turned off for the duration of the test. If it is determined the device needs repair, that will take a little more time.

It’s important to know that if your backflow device fails, you won’t be left without a water supply.

In many cases, the backflow device can be taken apart, cleaned, re-tested, and the device may pass. If it still doesn’t pass, cleaning and repairing can usually be done with the parts we have on hand. That means before we leave, we’ll have your water supply operating once again.
