Why Your Air Conditioner Freezes Up On Atlanta’s Hot Days
Imagine a day where the temperatures are creeping towards three digits. It’s hot.
All you want is a little relief when you walk through your front door. Yet the temperature is warm; the air is clammy, uncomfortable. Adjusting the thermostat does no good. And looking at your air conditioning unit only confuses the situation more. A puddle of water is pooling beside it. There’s even a little ice forming on one side.
How can that be?
You could have air conditioning equipment that is frozen. The evaporator coil is the component of a central air conditioning system that actually freezes. The evaporator coil transfers heat from the inside to the outside of your home. If not operating properly, this process no longer occurs.
There are two reasons why the evaporator coil may freeze:
- Insufficient refrigerant
- Airflow restriction
When the process no longer works correctly, the evaporator coil cannot operate to transfer heat properly. The unit in effect over-cools itself. In the process of cooling more than is needed, the condensation begins to freeze as it tips below the freezing point.
What should you do?
Start by turning off the air conditioner at the thermostat. Don’t attempt to thaw the system by increasing the temperature. Just turn the entire system off.
Confirm there isn’t a blockage that is restricting airflow to the system. You can replace the furnace or air handler filter along with any return air filters. Check to ensure all registers are unblocked and are not obstructed by furniture or drapes.
Call in one of our service technicians to inspect and repair the problem. The air conditioning system should be checked to ensure there are no refrigerant leaks or damage to the equipment. A technician will also diagnose the situation and determine how best to avoid this issue in the future. If a leak is present, it must be repaired to prevent freezing again in the future.
