How Does Your Air Conditioner Remove Humidity?

Have you ever noticed that high humidity makes the hottest of days hotter, and the coldest of days colder? At points, it can seem as if the weather is almost unbearable.

In the summer, your air conditioner is designed to regulate humidity. It has an evaporator coil that condenses water vapor from the air. When hot, moist air from your home moves across the cooled evaporator coil. The liquid is pulled away from the air, making your home feel less humid. The moisture collected is sent to a drain that leads outside your home, and away from the foundation. 

That’s the way air conditioners are supposed to work. If yours doesn’t, if you feel sticky even when your air conditioner is running, it might not be operating the way it should. 

Size matters. If you’ve purchased an AC unit that’s too large or too small for your home, it doesn’t operate effectively to keep your home at your desired temperature. A central air conditioning system needs to have sufficient power to move the air properly throughout the system and into your rooms. If it’s too large, it will tend to short cycle, which means the compressor won’t operate for a sufficient amount of time to dehumidify your space. If it’s too small, it may not be powerful enough to get your home’s air up to the right temperature and keep it there, especially during extreme temperature variances.
